Launching Leeway Media
Racing on a 45 foot catamaran in the America's Cup World Series, doing the twist with Chubby Checker as he explained why he deserved a Nobel Prize, dodging bullets in Watertown as police took the Boston Marathon bomber into custody. These were the highlights of my working life... until now.
The launch of Leeway Media now tops that list...not for the adrenaline rush or element of novelty it provides, but because of the opportunity it represents...the chance to build on twenty years of experience as a journalist and professional storyteller.
Leeway, by definition, means the freedom to do something the way you want to do it. I started Leeway Media to help people tell the stories they wanted to share with the world. I was fed up listening to the ever changing advice from news consultants on what was newsworthy, and what was not.
The new digital landscape has shifted the paradigm and the new reality is any story can go viral....as long as it is well told.
But that's the rub, isn't it? To be able to tell a compelling story, spin a good yarn, etc. takes some skill and a lot of practice. I liken storytelling to cooking. You can have all the right ingredients but if you don't know what you're doing, you could end up with a indigestible mess.
